Winter Face Care: 4 simple recipes

This winter, give your face a little TLC with these 4 simple recipes!

Lemon + Almond Oil Astringent
This is one of my favorites because it helps get rid of something we all hate — dark under eye circles! Combine fresh lemon juice with a few drops of almond oil and mix together. Apply the mixture underneath your eyes before you go to bed to wake up feeling fresh without those annoying dark circles!
tomato and honey

Tomato + Honey Paste
Cut up a slice of tomato and mix it with a little bit of honey. Once a thick paste forms, apply this on your face before you go to bed. (If you have white sheets, you may want to lay a towel down on your pillow to prevent any staining.)  Tomatoes contain high levels of vitamins and minerals that are great for the face. Wash the paste off in the morning when you wake, and you will have fresh, glowing skin throughout the day!
oats and honey

Oats + Honey Mask
This mask is great for moisturizing dry skin and very convenient since honey and oats are quite common in the kitchen. The two ingredients are safe for all skin types, and the oats will act to soothe rough skin. Mix together equal parts of honey and oats until a thick paste has formed. Apply evenly to the face while gently scrubbing in a circular motion. Wash off in the morning for smooth, moisturized skin!
coconut oil and teabtree

Coconut Oil + Tea Tree Oil
When these two oils are combined, it produces a serum that will help reduce redness in rashes and acne. The antiseptic properties will help to treat and prevent blemishes that appear on the face. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil to a spoonful of coconut oil and combine until a clear serum has formed. Spread evenly on the face before bed and wash off in the morning!

How to Minimize Indoor Air Pollution from Candles

1. Burn only beeswax or soy candles, which burn cleaner than those made with paraffin wax, which is a petroleum product.

2. Ensure the wick is the correct size for the thickness of the candle. Avoid too thick wicks and those with a wire core that keeps the wick upright. Burn candles with thin, braided wicks that curl over when burned. The wick should burn down evenly with the wax.

3. Avoid multiple wick candles.

4. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before lighting.

5. Keep your candle in a draft-free area. The goal is a low, even flame.

6. Don’t burn your candle in a narrow mouth container, which will cause unsteady air flow or increase flicker. Candles poured into glass jars or ceramic containers can often be problematic.

7. Only burn candles made of hard wax.

8. Avoid highly aromatic candles. Ensure the scent used in the candle is specifically formulated for candles and avoid wax that contains volatile aromatic hydrocarbons.

9. Cease burning any candles that leave sooty residues on candle holders or surrounding surfaces.

10. Increase ventilation in rooms where candles are burning, while avoiding direct drafts on the candles.

11. Extinguish candles after one hour of continuous burning and allow them to cool before relighting.
